When Health Management Associates promised an iPod touch® to the person submitting the best story idea for the new online HMAgazine, Matt Hayes hoped he could be in the running. “I didn’t think I’d win,” he said. “There are 56 hospitals and I figured there were lots of good stories.”
But his entry – about America’s only one-armed surgeon – was the top choice. Hayes is the CEO of Riverview Regional Medical Center in Gadsden, Alabama, where Dr. Lucian Newman III has a surgical practice. “People here were thrilled to see Dr. Newman featured,” Hayes said. “He’s someone they work with every day.”
Hayes calls his prize “incredible.” The iPod shuffle his wife gave him for Valentine’s Day had filled up quickly with 200 songs. The itouch allowed him to download CDs he hadn’t heard in years—many from college days. He now has 1000 songs to “reacquaint me with past stages of my life,” he joked.
Hayes also likes playing with other apps: Checking the weather and stock market, using the map function and catching YouTube. Also, his wife downloaded every picture ever taken of their 4- and 6-year old children, “from coming home from the hospital ‘til now.”
Bottom line, “It’s (iPod touch) a heck of an incentive,” he said. “Personally, I’ve been paying attention to what might be a story because now my wife may want one.”
And when his kids discover they can watch movies and play games on it, they’ll want one too.
