Sebastian River Medical Center hosted Indian River County's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Event on Saturday, October 17th, 2009. Over 600 walkers showed up bright and early Saturday morning to participate in the 5K walk to find a cure for breast cancer.
Emily Holliman, CEO of Sebastian River Medical Center, gave the welcome and opening remarks to kickoff Saturday's event. Her opening was followed by a heartfelt story given by Marcia Foster Watts, daughter of Annie Grace Foster, Chairman of Making Strides, who herself is a third generation breast cancer survivor. The story told by Ms. Watts brought many in the crowd to tears and was a strong reminder of what we were all waling for. The crowd of 600, all dressed in pink, was a sight to see as they headed down U.S.1 underneath the pink and white balloon arch in front of Sebastian River Medical Center.
Prior to Saturday's event, teams throughout the county had already raised $70,000. With many people turning in their contributions on the day of the walk that number is expected to exceed $100,000! Sebastian River Medical Center's team raised an astounding $11,500!
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is specifically dedicated to help fight breast cancer through research, prevention, early detection, and support programs for patients and their families. Sebastian River Medical Center is proud to be the host sponsor for Indian River County's Making Strides Event for two consecutive years!
