After a rigorous independent study, 1,800 hours in the field and a 3 hour, 165 multiple-choice question exam in Miami, Barbara Bender, RN, BSN, CAPA, of the Ambulatory (day surgery) Department now holds a Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse (CAPA) national certification. Ms. Bender came to Lower Keys Medical Center from Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Tahoe, CA, two and one-half years ago. She has extensive nursing experience in numerous clinical areas.
Ms. Bender joins an elite group of approximately 9,000 other perianesthesia nurses who are currently certified in their specialty. For patients, CAPA certification ensures increased safety and treatment with advanced knowledge in the specialty. Ms. Bender was educated on anti-nausea techniques, nausea being the biggest complaint post surgery. She also underwent a series of assessments, learning to identify problems before they become one, further ensuring patient safety.
In the future, she is considering getting her CPN certification, which will benefit the ambulatory team even more. LKMC recognizes and celebrates Ms. Bender’s outstanding achievement! Earning CAPA is evidence of her commitment to making excellence the benchmark for quality patient care.
